Reading in Y2
Reading in Year 2
In class, we will continue to teach phonics, revisiting Phase 3 sound before moving onto Phase 5 and the alternative spellings. The children will also be having two reading squad sessions in school where the children will read the same book in small groups. During these groups, children will have the opportunity to practise their fluency, prosody and comprehension skills. It is recommended that your children read this text three times a week and you can support your child by accessing the book in ebook format on the collins ebooks app. Your child’s login details can be found in their reading diary. Please let us know if you have mislaid these.
Every week, the children will come home with a levelled reading book to read at home. We recommend that you read the book three times, where possible. The first time enables the children to focus on decoding the words, the second time allows the children to practise their fluency and reading with prosody, and the third time is a great opportunity to ask your child some comprehension questions to check their understanding of the text. You will often find pre-written comprehension questions at the back of each book. Please record any reading at home in your child's Year 2 reading diary, as this helps us to know when a child's book needs changing.
The children will also be coming home with a library book where visits to the school library are possible. This book is intended to be purely for reading for pleasure, and you can read this book to your child, or they can read it to you, if they wish.
In Year 2 we do not consider any child to be a 'Free Reader'. Rather, some children will become 'Enhanced Readers'. The banded scheme will continue beyond Year 2 it is important to remember we will be doing your child no favours if we rush them through book bands. Learning to read is not a race; it is a journey!
We are always happy to welcome reading volunteers. The children love having adults to read to and we appreciate you giving up your free time! Please let your class teacher know if you are free to come in and help and look out for a letter about Reading Volunteers.
